Such a great idea to do a video blog for audio gear! You’re a genius Ronan! Have you seen another piece of gear that has these light switches or is this original to this unit?

This is the first piece of gear that I have seen these switches. A pal of mine that is a real tech head did some testing on a unit and found the switches to be quite strong.

Hey Ronan, excellent job my friend. This format is really effective; fun to be a part of. Thanks for all your time and effort!

Sam C…. The only other piece of audio equipment I know of that utilizes these switches is a remote recording manufacturing company. I remember being at the NAB show in 2007 and seeing a small frame remote mixer; these switches were used for each channel’s phantom on/off and -20dB pad… can’t remember the company name though ;) .

    hi Ronan, awesome job!!!
as most know i reviewed the 583s when it first came out and just loved it, still do: )~ The Review is here at Pan60.com.
Ronan and anyone else, i did some investigating and found that the strength of the switches to be just as durable as the metal.
these are a compost and very strong: )~
the amount of force required to brake these would also damage the metal stem switch.
glad you like the pre: )~
also i did spend some time swamping tubes, if you have the time i would do it!
    thanks Ronan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks! Great idea to do video because so much info comes over in a little time. I only wish, even though there are limitations, that you could demonstrate some of the sonics of the gear.

I have 3 583s pres (without EQ) and remember hearing Scott say once that the switches are actually made of lexan or something like that. They are industrial strength which belies the feel. I don’t think Scott likes making anything with even one cheap part.

Hey Ronan, thanks for the review. I’ve never heard of LaChapell Audio, but your enthusiastic review was fun to watch. I still don’t have a great single channel pre amp, and aren’t sure what I’m looking for – but the “tube pre” sound you described seems to be close. I’m not big into gear yet (because I can’t afford it yet,) but it’s nice to get ideas of what to save up for. Thanks again.

    Ronan,
Thank you for taking the time out to do this video review of these goodies.
The 583 looks like something to check out as I just love those tube 1083s…lol!
It really appears to be beautifully constructed, and at this level of the game, it is nice to have a variety of flavors to bring to the mix. Then you just shove the faders up and slap on some reverb and you are done ;)

    I’ll be watching,
    John

    Cooter,

I am developing plans to make it possible for me to post audio samples, but there are two things holding it up at the moment (1) I work 6-7 days a week producing and mixing records as my day job and I do the show as a fun thing on the side when I have a tiny bit of down time. It will actually take quite a bit more time include good audio samples. (2) If I post audio samples I want to make sure that I do it in a way that does the gear justice. Right now the audio has to be fairly compressed to allow the videos to stream, and crummy audio quality will not do justice to something like the 583E. I have to figure out a way to link high quality audio samples and the videos that meets that needs of people that stream the show from various sites around the world.

Thanks for checking out the show.

    hi ronan…

i love your recording show…very informative for sure…

i have 2 of the 583’s which i purchased when they first came out (minus the eq’s, of course)…for me, the word “awesome” isn’t a powerful enough word to describe the 583 pre..they make anything from an acoustic guitar (pre set at modest level), to a savage electric guitar (pre is cranked quite a bit being fed by a line 6 pod) sound…well…awesome… :-)

i have them in a purple audio sweet ten 500 series rack…..prior to my purchase, i was using the a-designs pacifica along with the purple audio biz pres..(i have a modest home studio with some not-so-modest toys)…..

being a professional guitarist for quite some time, i decided to settle down and get into the recording end of things about 3 yrs. ago…i hope to open the studio up next year to recording acoustic musicians…

the la chapell pres have added a totally new dimension to my recordings!! so, there’s my testimonial….

and here is a link to some of my toys (if it doesn’t get deleted)

and here’s a link to a tune using the 583 on acoustic gtr and electric gtrs…bass and keys are thru the pacifica…

again, thank you for your excellent show!!

    sincerely….couser crowley
