Sound City Studios Tour. Neil Young to Metallica to Kyuss to Tom Petty to Nirvana
| April 6th, 2009 | 16 Comments | « Previous | Episode 3 | Next » |
Episode 03 is our first guerrilla studio tour. We visit one of the coolest studios on the planet, Sound City in Van Nuys, CA. The list of legendary albums recorded in their studio “A” is staggering: Nirvana “Nevermind”, Tom Petty “Damn the Torpedoes” and “Wildflowers”, Neil Young “After the Gold Rush”, Fleetwood Mac “Rumors”, Tool “Undertow”, Kyuss “Welcome to Sky Valley”, Dio “Holy Diver”, and other classic albums by Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, System of a Down, Metallica, Johnny Cash, Rage Against the Machine……..
This place is heaven for analog recording gear fanatics and has what some consider the best drum room in the world. These videos are fairly high quality. If you have trouble viewing on your connection you can download the M4V file to watch in itunes or view this episode on Youtube
This episode focuses on Sound City Studio A. If you want to see some shots of the awesome Sound City Studio B check out the outtakes and other content on our Youtube Ronan’s Recording Show Extras channel.

That was a fun peek inside!
It takes a different breed to resist the simplicity of the digital demon.
Just looking at that tape deck and how meticulously clean it is gave me shivers of dread remembering q-tips, rubbing alcohol and tiny pieces of shredded tape.

Hello!
First off I have to say that these first 3 shows have been really good, but I would like to comment on content…
I KNOW that you are doing this during the extra hours that we have in our 32 hour days, and I KNOW that you can not keep everyone happy. But using Studio City as an example, I would have LOVED to see more of the tracking room, and more info on it’s walls, etc just because it IS hallowed as “the drum room”, the racks and what vintage stuff they have, etc…ya know, a little more “nerd-ee” stuff.
So my thought is, maybe a PDF of this type of stuff? It don’t have to be like “The wall is 4.24″ away from the Rockwool filled Gobo that is made out of planks from a 1700’s dairy barn….” Just your passing technical thought’s on what was / is important about the room, or the gear, that makes it special.
Anyway, just tossing an idea out there, and again Thank You for doing this!

Hey Smuf,
Thanks so much for the input. I really appreciate it. You are totally right. I realized when i was editing the show ( literally at 4am) that I had neglected to get any great live room shots. I tried to make up for it with some nice live room shots by John Paterno. Hopefully every studio tour will be better than the last. We shot the entire episode from load in to load out in about 80 minutes or so. It was more chaotic than I planned for, but I am having fun learning as I go and luckily tons of people seem to enjoy watching me fumble along. As for the more comprehensive gear list check out the Sound City Studios web site http://www.soundcitystudios.com/
Thanks again, all this input helps me keep making the shows better.

The first time you entered Sound City, were you working as a musician, producer, or something else? And how long did it take for you to get there?
Thanks, R-man!

First time I entered sound City was about 9 years ago. I was producing a record at studio located on the other side of the parking lot (Sound Image) and I went over and begged the intern working in the office to let me look around. A year of so ago I finally did a day of recording there. When I launched the show, it was one of the top studios I really wanted to feature. (I will make up any old excuse to hang out at cool great studios)
Owen, I am checking out your band and really digging it: http://www.myspace.com/thetimelinepost

Sound City Studio, Wow,,,, excuse me but I’m soaking in the moment. Thanks Ronan for great narration to a historic music studio. Keep up the good work. Youtube has its place but your high quality videos truly have a clear impact in more ways than one. Don’t hold anything back, please. Hmmm
