Thoughts on delay Times, Frog Porridge and Drum Tracking

A quick video from Kuala Lumpur while I am tracking the Malaysian band Tempered Mental . I share some thoughts on picking delay times, and walk through the drum miking we used on the album we were recording at The Ark Studio in KL.

Food!! Interesting tip on delay, and I like seeing specific setups like that, but the food shots at the end were what did it for me this time

Is that fried tofu at the end? If so, I’m sure that was a delicious meal! Also, have you tested the AKG C214 on vocals yet? I’ve had my eye on them lately.

Nice advice on use of delays, thanks Ronan. Good one!
the KM184 seem to be a popular choice on hi-hats…
Why aren’t you following me on twitter yet?

I have enjoyed your videos, they have been a big help in me growing as an engineer. I started the old fashion way (sortah) wit Trial and error. shows, forums like yours help people like me achieve great recording. Thanks Very interested in the boot camp.

What were you looking for out of the mic you put a couple-three feet in front of the kit, down low? Is that a mono whole-kit mic, or something more complementary to the kick? Is it the kind of mic you might compress the snot out of later?
As always, Ronan, thanks. Drums can sometimes be a pain to capture well and the real-world advice you give never goes unappreciated!

Thanks for the delay tip. I’m really into exploring that old Pink Floyd vibe, so that tip is great. Looks like you are having a great time in Malaysia. I love that place. No shortage of amazing food there with the fusion of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures. Lots of amazing beaches and highlands. And, apparently they like to rock out too!

Thanks for the update! Random little inclusions of the busy life of Ronan is probably just as helpful and fun as your big featured episodes.
Something that I really want to know is where I can get the music you play in the videos (the intros, outros, cuts and so-on). Those little clips of music get me jazzed about how awesome music can be, and I want to hear more.
While I’m on the topic, what are some of your favorite recordings that you’ve done? In an older episode, you randomly mentioned August and Everything After by Counting Crows as one of your favorite albums (although it wasn’t one of your productions), and I’ve been listening to it ever since. Could you share any favorite albums that come to mind, that you may or may not have produced, that get you excited about music, and what you do for a living?

I found it interesting that you used the 214s, seeing as I have a pair of those myself! I just love them personally, but I’m nowhere as seasoned as you, so I was wondering if you could give us some more of your thoughts on them sometime! Thanks!
