Hi Hat Miking and other Drum Recording Tips

July 11th, 2013 | 13 Comments   « Previous  |  Episode 49  |  Next »

We have only one spot left for my six day Recording Boot Camp in LA at the end of the month, and a few left for the one in Athens Greece in September.

This was supposed to be a short video about hi hat mics, but morphed into something with a lot more info about drum recording. We check out mics from MXL, Shure, sE, Audio Technica, Cascade and a snare drum from Sugar Percussion.

You can download 44.1/16 audio samples and to watch on your iphone or ipod download the m4v version

Thanks for the tips Ronan! I actually just got one of those Se-X1′a for free. I did a comparo for the company with a Rode NT-1 (my fav cheap mike) and the SE was actually a bit better.

    Awesome tips as usual.

LOVED the Se X1 with the 32’s. It got that Stewart Copeland sound.

When you do the fuller review tell us what else it works well on.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

PS—Just to let the viewers know, Ronan doesn’t just wear the headphones for drum set ups. He wears them everywhere. But to be fair if you go out to dinner with him he wears much nicer sets. Like the rhinestone ones that really show off his eyes [lol]

Yeah I was one of the founders of Freak Baby. Many people know the name because Dave Grohl (Nirvana Foo Fighters) was also in that band at one time.

Great video Ronan. Quick question. I have seen some engineers use some acoustic treatment to minimize the bleed between the various spot mics on drums. basically, they will wrap acoustic foam around the mics, especially the snare mic, to minimize picking up the hi hat. There are also products you can buy for the same effect. Do you ever try that or do you feel it creates just a different set of problems?

I understand doing that, but I almost never do it except in really difficult projects. If you really spend the time to get the drums prepared right, played right and miked right, everything gets a lot easier.

HA! Perhaps my classy van which was mostly held together with duct tape (Banff) was inspirational for your duct taping habit? Awesome video man!

Yea I liked the SE as well. Can tuck it in just to bring some crispness to the hats without it being obvious.

“Freak Baby” just sounds like a Zappa tribute band.

Great Show Ronan, also im been using the Avant CK1 in hi hats and they sound great also, in kick drums when you want a flatter sound over pre eq mics
