Air EQ explained – Featuring Al Stewart and Dave Nachmanoff

September 12th, 2013 | 13 Comments   « Previous  |  Episode 51  |  Next »

In this episode I explain “Air EQ”, or “Why the heck would anyone boost EQ at 40K?”. I show some 40K boosting with the air band on the Maag EQ4 plugin and we pull up examples with Al Stewart in the studio (with Dave Nachmanoff) to try it out.

Great Video Ronan. Thanks for the tutorial. I hadn’t heard Al Stewart’s voice in ages and he really sounds terrific. Very formal attire for the studio though ; )

  3. Your Bro.

I was most impressed with the white boy dance moves of both you and Al….because other than that, I had no idea what you were talking about.

    Ronan,

My dog put his paws up to his ears, gave a quick whimper and passed out on the carpet.

    So I guess it’s working.

All seriousness aside, I’ve heard the 16K [at a shoot out at Ronans'] and it was gorgeous. Astoundingly, the 40K is even better.

Ronan has revealed a deep magical mystery of the mixing class. We should all sit up and take notice.

Thanks very much for the 10K demo. That’s what I remember as the sound of “boosting the highs”. Never liked it much. Now I know why.

Once again you have enlightened us.

    Thanks again,

    Jeff

PS—”A lot bit”? Does American Heritage know you’re using this? Maybe you can get credit for it. You know, before it sweeps the international scene.

OK Ronan, While I do believe that the tool you think is boosting the gloss or brilliance above 20K is doing something, we should both know from a technical understanding of how digital audio works that it is not the result of boosting harmonics at 40K Hz (at least with the digital EQ). Air EQ is probably just introducing some rounding errors at frequencies below 20K in the box.

Thanks for chiming in. The point of the technique is not about what is happening around 20k or above, it is about the shape of the EQ curve in the frequencies well below that.

May I simply saay what a relie to uncovber a person that truly understands
what they are talking about on the web. You certainly understand how tto
bring an issue to light and make it important.
More and more people must look at this and understand this side off
the story. It’s surprising you aren’t more popular because you most certainly possess the gift.

A most informative video! I often wondered why engineers boosted the frequencies in those ranges, and now it makes perfect sense.
